NFL Black Monday
Doomsday for NFL head coaches is among us. The Monday following the last week of the NFL’s regular season is usually when most coaches find out they’ve lost their job, earning the moniker Black Monday. We already know of five coaches who have been fired or have contracts that won’t be extended.
You’re Fired!
* Nov. 8th 2010 – Wade Phillips fired as Cowboys head coach.
* Nov. 22nd 2010 – Brad Childress fired as Vikings head coach.
* Dec. 26th 2010 – Mike Singletary fired as 49ers head coach.
* Dec. 6th 2010 – Josh McDaniels fired as Broncos head coach.
* Dec. 31st 2010 – John Fox’s contract will not be extended.
* Jan. 3rd 2011 – TBD
o Updated 12.03.2010
o Eric Mangini fired as Browns head coach (called it).
o Marvin Lewis’ contract has expired and the Bengals have not made him any offers (called it).
o The Raiders have until January 18th to make a decision on Tom Cable.
You’re About To Be Fired!
Here are a couple of coaches that I think are “guaranteed gone“.
* Eric Mangini (CLE) - Mike Holmgren almost didn’t bring Mangini back when he took over last year. This year’s poor performance will be enough to get him canned.
* Marvin Lewis (CIN) – The Bengals have had only 2 seasons above .500 since Lewis took over in 2003. Luckily for him one of those seasons was last year, but people have short memories when you only win 4 games the next year.
On The Hot Seat, But Gets a Pass
The rumors are swirling around these guys, but I think they’ll get a pass and be back next year.
* Ken Whisenhunt (ARI) – You can’t win in this league without a quarterback. Address that need first and this guy will probably turn things back around.
* Tony Sporano (MIA) – A tough division and a couple of close losses have them out of the playoff hunt. After a red hot first year in 2008, Sporano and the Dolphins have cooled off with back to back 3rd place AFC East seasons.
* Chan Gailey (BUF) - Sure they had a horrible record, but its impossible to win in Buffalo. The Bills lost 5 games by less then 7 points and were a bit exciting at times with Fitzpatrick throwing to Stevie Johnson. Gailey will stick around, but he’ll have to win some more games next year.
* Gary Kubiak (HOU) – After week 1 it looked like it was the Texans year. Then the NFL realized they had the worst defense ever assembled. The team is so close to be a playoff team that I expect them to fire the defensive coordinator and give Kubiak one more shot.
* Jeff Fisher (TEN) – This seems to be turning into one of those situations where either the QB or head coach has got to go. Usually that means the QB is safe and the head coach is fired, but this situation is a bit different. We’re talking about Jeff Fisher and Vince Young here, surely they’ll choose Fisher.
We’ll make sure and keep you up to date with who gets fired and who keeps their job. So check back on Sunday afternoon and throughout “Black Monday“.
